Gyan
Mandir, Uttarkashi - 1978
In 1953, after Guru Dev's death, his secretary,
Brahmachari Mahesh ji, travelled to Uttar Kashi and stayed in this ashram, and lived
in isolation for many months. After this period the brahmachari
travelled to the south of India, where he began lecturing and teaching
meditation, then becoming known as Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
The large sheds to the front of the ashram
were erected sometime in the early 1960's, as it was envisaged by
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi that they
would be used to house course participants attending his Spiritual
Guides meditation courses. It is said that when the sheds at Uttarkashi
were abandoned in favour of premises
elsewhere (in Rishikesh, at Shankaracharya Nagar), the government
annexed them, for the storage of sacks of grains.
