1941, after being appointed Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math, Swami
Brahmananda Saraswati set about rebuilding the peeth
at Joshimath, a project that, even in spite of the difficulties of
difficult communications and rough track roads, is said to have been
completed within only three months.

In
1973, Swami Swaroopanand ordered the construction of another peeth, at the site
of Trotacharya's Gupha. The two peeths
are run by different swamis
with different followers, the older math run by Swami
Vasudevanand Saraswati, and the newer, grander building, run
by Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati.
