If somebody talks against Paramatma, denies the Veda Shastras, or scorns any sadhu, mahatma, or venerable persons, he should be replied to only with courtesy. Becoming a scoundrel for a scoundrel will only advance his side (of the argument) – therefore reply with courtesy to the words of the scoundrel. If you also become tomoguna (the quality of impurity) then you cannot attain that “number” of the rascal, because he is a long-standing scoundrel, and you are a newly made (scoundrel), therefore it will be difficult to defeat him by his moral behaviour, because it takes time to become a scoundrel and he is a clever scoundrel. For this reason it is only proper to meet the despicableness of scoundrels with our courtesy.
'Achcha' (Good)! This is it, the proper thing to do is to deploy your conduct in such a way that scoundrels do not get the opportunity to play their tricks at all. Therefore it is good to stay with the guidance of:-
दुर्जनम् प्रथमम् वन्दे
"durjanam
prathamam vande"
‘First
praise the scoundrel’.
You should restrain these people by your own civility. Even then, if they come before you, you say:-
ddtu
ddtu galIn gailvNtae ÉvNt>,
[Give, give abuses all of you]
[Guru
Dev explains the meaning of this
Sanskrit saying]
‘You may babble lots of abuses because you are abusive;
you will give only what you have. According to your own intellect you are doing
the right thing.’

दुर्जन
के लिये दुर्जन मत
बनो
यदि कोई परात्मा के विरुद्ध
बोले वेद - शात्र का
खण्डन करे या किसी साधु -
महात्मा या पूज्य जनों की निन्दा करे तो उसा उत्तर सज्जनता के साथ ही देना
चाहिये।
दुर्जन के लिये दुर्जन बन जाने से उसके पक्ष की वृद्धि होती है - इसलिये
दुर्जन के
वाक्यों का उत्तर सज्जनता के साथ दो। यदि तुम में भी तमोगुण आ गया तो तुम
भी उस
नम्बर के दुर्जन नहीं बन सकोगे क्योंकि वह पुराना दुर्जन है और तुम नये
बनोगे
इसलिये उसकी नीति से उसे परास्त करना कठिन पड़ेगा
क्योंकि तुमको दुर्जन बनते - बनते
समय लेगा और वह दक्ष दुर्जन है। इसलिये दुर्जनों की दुर्जनता
का अपनी
सज्जनता से सामना करना ही उचित है। अच्छा तो यह है कि व्यवहार में ऐसा
वरतो कि
दुर्जनों को अपनी चालें चलने का मौका ही न मिले। इसके लिये - दुर्जनं प्रथमं वन्दे की नीति अच्छी रहती है।
अपनी सज्जनता से इन
लोगों को दबाये रखना चाहिये। पर फिर भी यदि ये सामने आ ही जायँ तो कह दो
कि -
ददतु ददतु गालीन गालिवन्तो
भवन्तः।
आप खूब गालियाँ बकें क्योंकि आप
गालिवन्त गाली वाले
हैं जो
आपके पास है वही तो आप
देंगे। आप अपनी बुद्धि के अनुसार ठीक ही कर रहे हो। यह कहते हुए
भववान्
शंकराचार्य महाराज ने कहा कि यह हमारे गुरुजी का आदेश था कि कोई
अपमान करे तो तीन
बार तक सहन करना चाहिये और यदि फिर भी करता जाय तो समझ लेना चाहिये कि यह
पागल है।
पागल क्या नहीं कर सकता - पागल की बातों का कोई बुरा नहीं मानता।
